Having just returned from Germany a month or so ago I am still very attuned to things German. So as I was reading through Twitter this morning I came across this article by Kyle Mizokami about the Fulda Gap. (I am familiar with his writing mainly from his co-founding of Japan Security Watch as well as his blogging at War is Boring.) This article struck a chord with me as I remember reading a lot about the Fulda Gap during the Cold War. It was going to be the site of the ultimate modern battle between the Warsaw Pact and NATO. While my family did not visit the area during our trip to Germany we did pass signs indicating roads to Fulda. Everytime I saw those signs I immediatley thought about the Fulda Gap. The article is well worth a read, especially if you lived through the Cold War and ever wondered what the Fulda Gap actually was. If you cannot get enough of the Fulda gap then I can recommend Wargame European Escalation to fulfil your Cold war needs.
